Rooney wins cup for United

Sir Alex Ferguson picked up the 32nd trophy of his managerial career thanks to super sub Wayne Rooney.

The England striker had been left on the bench for the League Cup Final as he was nursing the effects of flu - and Aston Villa took the lead at Wembley thanks to a cooly taken penalty after just five minutes by James Milner after Gabby Agbonlahor had been tackled harshly in the box by Nemanja Vidic.

But it was Rooney's starting replacement Michael Owen who brought the Red Devils level after 12 minutes when he sidefooted home after Richard Dunne has botched a clearance from a Dimitar Berbatov cross.

Rooney appeared after 42 minutes to replace Owen who pulled a hamstring and with 74 minutes on the clock headed his 28th goal of the season to seal United's victory after Valencia cross.
