Crouch or Cole?
Friday, 16/10/2009
Peter Crouch and Carlton Cole appear to be battling it out for the last striker's place in England's 2010 World Cup finals squad.
Crouchy's two-goals against Belarus this week will have boosted his chances further. But Cole's power and hard work means he will also be in Fabio Capello's thinking. With Wayne Rooney and Emile Heskey appearing to be the manager's first choices, backed up by Jermain Defoe and possibly Theo Walcott, there will be a real fight for the final front spots. Gabby Agbonlahor still has an outside chance, although he faded against Belarus - and it is still impossible to rule out Michael Owen providing he is fit and scoring.
Capello will probably use the showcase friendly against Brazil in Qatar on November 14 to experiment further with his line up. He has until the end of May to decide on his final squad.
What do you think? Which strikers do you think should be going to South Africa? Let's have your comments!

I think owen is at his peak and for rooney he will be a player to watch 2010, with his scoring ability.
Ed: But sadly Michael Owen is injured and will not be back in time for the World Cup.

Darren Bent : the second-top English scorer in the premiership, and that’s without the service that the likes of Milner could provide, therefore an obvious choice.Shame though, because a fit Dean Ashton would beat any of the contenders to play alongside Rooney:he could hold up a ball like Heskey; work as hard as Cole; dominate defenders like Agbonlahor; poach like Owen; score like Defoe and head like Crouch. Also, he had amazing pace for a big bloke, his movement was superb, he had clever feet and could pass as well as the likes of Fabregas on his day.So, bravo to Dean Ashton, a man with an illustrious career ahead of him that was ruined by terrible injuries.I believe that Scott Parker should have a look-in as well, because he has been the incredible driving force behind the attractive football of West Ham.His work rate is awesome.Call me a biased Hammer, but just look at their performances (e.g 2006 FA Cup Final ; West Ham v Arsenal FA Cup 3rd Round 2010). I think that, other than Bent & Wazza (obviously), Fabio Cappelo should take Carlton Cole, Crouchy and Defoe, as Owen is injured, Heskey doesn’t work hard enough, and does little other than hold the ball up. (He also has the world’s worst first touch). For me, Agbonlahor just isn’t quite there yet.

I think they should put Micheal Owen onto the final team
ED: Sadly Michael’s current injury means he is very unlikely to be even be fit by the finals

I would definitely take Cole as he holds the ball up like Heskey but also scores, something which Heskey struggles to do. I think the argument is between Heskey and Crouch and again the difference Crouchy knocks them in for England.

Rooney and DCefoe should be the starting pair surely? Why doesn’t Cappelo start Defoe? He’s a quality striker. They should definitely go. Walcott, more of a winger but he’s still a good player and should go. Agbonlahor has improved himself this season, I’d say he should go above of Owen. Owen has had a poor to average season and without that hat-trick the other week, he would of been hopeless in getting a place in the England squad. Crouch, two great goals at the weekend, earned his team three points, but how reliable is he? I mean he doesn’t score that much. Carlton Cole, i think not. I don’t know much about him but he’s injured a fair bit, but is half decent when he plays. And finally Heskey, he doesn’t do much, why choose him? I’d much rather start Defoe every game.

Crouch must go to South Africa. Adds a different level of play to a team that could be looking for other options as the World Cup campaign progresses. His record proves he can score for England.

Rooney is totally first choice, Heskey a definite no. Owen should watch from his shack and Crouch and Cole should go on the plane then there are no DONKEYS like Heskey in the team who haven’t scored for over a year - and he plays centre forward ! I’m not an Owen fan but i’d choose him over Heskey every time. Exactly Steven T, Crouch to go, at least Crouch has scored in every game for England!!!
Ed: Crouchy has to go in my book too…

Crouch must go on the plane to South Africa but think Owen should watch the World Cup from his sofa.

Rooney is a definite… but who else.. good question!
Heskey, Defoe and Walcott are a good choice.
I would pick Crouch over Cole.
Owen- I would say No.
Agbonlahor- maybe
Good debate though Mr Editor.
Whats your opinion?
Ed: Crouchy’s record speaks for itself. He’s good in the air, clever on the deck…he has to go!
