Capello axes Terry

Capello axes Terry

Friday, 05/02/2010

Rio Ferdinand has taken over as England captain after John Terry was stripped of the task.

Boss Fabio Capello announced his decision to axe Terry following a 12-minute meeting with the defender in London.

The coach said he had chosen a vice-captain and number three when he named Terry as skipper and that there was no reason to change that decision. That would imply that Man United defender Rio will be his World Cup captain with Steven Gerrard as his deputy.

Terry took over as captain from David Beckham in August 2006 during the reign of Steve McClaren.

The Chelsea defender retained the position when Capello took over as manager, although other players were given on-off games as leader at the start of the Italian’s rule.

Terry became official England captain again in August 2008 but the title was taken away from him following recent allegations involving his private life.
