USA 1 Ghana 2
Saturday, 26/06/2010
The host continent has a team through to the World Cup quarter-finals after Ghana battled their way past the USA in extra-time.
Ghana got off to a flying start after just five minutes when Ricardo Clark lost the ball on the half-way line, Kevin-Prince Boateng raced through with it, past Jay DeMerit and slotted it home past keeper Tim Howard.
The USA crept back into the game slowly although Ghana still had chances. Ghana then appeared to be happy trying to defend their lead although the industrious Boateng kept probing for further breaks.
In a pretty open game Ghana kept asking questions as they hunted their first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals. USA appeared much brighter after the break and Jonathan Mensah brought down Clint Dempsey to give away a penalty.
Landon Donovan sent the keeper the wrong way with his spot-kick. The game died out as it neared time - and both sides had to settle for extra-time.
Just three minutes into the first period of extra-time Asamoah Gyan cooly slotted the ball home from 16-yards to give Ghana the lead again. USA battled bravely but they were kept at bay by keeper Richard Kingson.
Goals:
Boateng (5)
Donovan (pen 82)
Gyan (93)
Shoot Match of the Man: Asamoah Gyan
