The former Ajax and Hamburg star, who moved to Madrid in 2008 for £12m, also interests Chelsea and Liverpool.

Now 27, he would be expected to provide a supply line for international team-mate Robin van Persie.

Van der Vaart is under contract at the Bernabeau until 20103 and Madrid would expect to recoup a lot of their outlay. One stumbling block could be the star’s wages.
